Himachal Red Alert: Why It Was Issued
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh.
Because of the overnight rain on June 28–29, the Shimla–Kalka railway line has been shut down due to landslides and debris on the tracks.
Areas Under Red Alert
According to IMD, 10 districts are at high risk:
- Shimla
- Kullu
- Kangra
- Mandi
- Solan
- Sirmaur
- Bilaspur
- Hamirpur
- Una
- Chamba
This alert means the weather can be dangerous with a risk of landslides, blocked roads, and damage to homes and travel routes.
Himachal Red Alert Impact: Shimla–Kalka Train Suspended
Heavy rainfall caused trees, mud, and rocks to fall on the tracks of the famous UNESCO World Heritage Shimla-Kalka Toy Train Route.
The railway has stopped all trains on this route until the tracks are cleared and it’s safe again.
- Debris was found near Koti and Chakki Mod.
- Teams are working to clear the line, but no train timings have been confirmed yet.
Roads Also Blocked
The rain also caused landslides on NH-5 and other important roads. Many local routes in Shimla, Solan, and Kullu are closed.
- About 37 roads blocked statewide
- Small bridges washed away in some areas
- Power cuts reported in multiple villages
Rain to Continue Till July 4
